Gbolahan, a former Islamic school student, was lured to Warri by a friend who promised to assist him financially with his travel plans to Cairo, Egypt, after he struggled to raise ₦150,000. “I needed money to complete my travel plans, so a friend invited me to Warri for help. But when I arrived, everything changed,” Gbolahan recounted.
Upon arrival, he was picked up by a vehicle that took him to a different location, where he was locked in a house with other victims. “They told me I couldn’t leave, and they forced me to learn internet fraud. They beat me when I expressed a desire to go home,” he explained, adding that the beatings were so severe that he lost control of his bodily functions and began spitting blood.
Despite the brutality, Gbolahan was coerced into participating in fraudulent schemes targeting unsuspecting victims on social media. “We hacked Facebook accounts using phone numbers as passwords and deceived foreigners into sending us money by pretending to be in a relationship with them,” he stated.
For nine months, he had no access to his phone and could not contact his family, who remained unaware of his situation. “I’m happy now because I feel free. It felt like being in prison,” he said. However, he expressed concern about facing charges in court, remarking, “If they send me to prison, it feels like going from one prison to another.”
Meanwhile, the police spokesperson indicated that the authorities in Warri are investigating the case, and Gbolahan, along with others held under similar circumstances, will face charges in court. The police have also encouraged any family members of Gbolahan to come forward for more information at the police station.
