Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has dismissed the possibility of forming a new political party ahead of the 2027 general elections. In an interview with Vanguard, Lawal explained that after weighing their options, the group concluded that creating a new party would be unrealistic due to time constraints and the urgency to unite opposition forces before the next electoral cycle.

“We’ve resolved to align with an existing party. Some key members have even stepped down from their roles to pave the way for fresh leadership,” he stated.

Lawal added that the coalition is finalizing leadership appointments for essential positions including national chairman, secretary, organising secretary, and treasurer.

Initially, the group considered either registering a new party or merging with an existing one. However, given the legal hurdles and internal disputes within several parties, they opted for a platform with fewer complications.

“Many parties are embroiled in court battles, internal crises, or unwilling to accommodate us. Fortunately, we’ve identified a welcoming and functional party,” he noted.

He confirmed that the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Working Committee (NWC) have already met and prepared to admit the coalition’s members.

Reacting to a parallel move by Dr. Usman Ardo, Convener of the League of Northern Democrats, who is advocating for the registration of the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), Lawal accused Ardo of unauthorized name-dropping. He alleged that Ardo has falsely associated figures like Rotimi Amaechi, Nasir El-Rufai, Atiku Abubakar, and Peter Obi with his agenda.

“Ardo is making baseless claims. We can’t stop him from pursuing party registration, but it’s clear that forming and stabilizing a new party before 2027 is simply impractical,” Lawal said.

He clarified that prominent figures like Atiku and Obi are involved in the coalition independently—not as representatives of the PDP or Labour Party.

“Many of us are ex-APC. While Atiku and Obi are with us, they’re doing so in their personal capacities. This is a neutral platform, created to offer Nigerians a true alternative,” he explained.

Lawal also weighed in on the internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), noting that Nyesom Wike’s increasing influence may drive a significant number of disaffected members toward their coalition.

“If Wike takes over the PDP, the majority who disagree with him won’t defect to the APC. They’ll likely join us—and that would greatly enhance our numbers,” he predicted.

He concluded by stating that the legal documentation for the merger is nearing completion and reaffirmed the coalition’s commitment to forming a credible, inclusive political force that could disrupt the political status quo in 2027.

“This is the most realistic and strategic direction. Any claim to the contrary is either uninformed or intentionally deceptive,” Lawal asserted.
