The construction contract for the National Library was awarded in 2006 during Obasanjo’s administration to Reynolds Construction Company for N8.9 billion, with an initial completion timeline of four years. However, the project has remained unfinished for nearly two decades.

“As we celebrate this milestone, we must also confront the pressing issue of completing the National Library headquarters in Abuja,” Obasanjo stated.

He described the library as a crucial asset, not just symbolically but functionally, as it represents Nigeria’s commitment to harnessing the power of knowledge for societal transformation. He urged all stakeholders, including the government, private sector, and international partners, to prioritize its completion. “A fully operational National Library headquarters will serve as a beacon for literacy, cultural preservation, and a global symbol of Nigeria’s commitment to education and innovation,” Obasanjo added.

During the event, National Librarian Prof. Veronica Anunobi shared the library’s achievements, noting that since its inception in 1974, the library has issued over one million International Standard Book Numbers (ISBNs) and nearly 28,000 International Serials Numbers (ISSNs). This year, the library also made strides in issuing International Standard Music Numbers (ISMN) for published music scores.
