The caretaker chairmen of Ondo State’s 18 local government areas and 33 Local Council Development Areas have taken their case to the Court of Appeal, challenging a state High Court order that suspended them from office. The Ondo State High Court in Akure had halted the inauguration of the 18 caretaker chairmen and the 33 chairmen of the newly established LCDAs, preventing them from carrying out their official duties. The appellants also requested an order to set aside the interim injunction granted against them on November 30, 2023, and sought a hearing of the substantive suit before a different judge from Justice Yemi Fasanmi. Meanwhile, a circular from the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs instructed the heads of local government administration to recover all properties from the suspended chairmen. The circular emphasized the need for the heads to assume acting roles pending the legal resolution of the matter.

However, the appellants’ counsel, Mr. Banji Ayelakin, informed the ministry of the filed appeal, countering the ministry’s claims that the caretaker chairmen were still operating in their official capacities despite the court’s judgment. Ayelakin pointed out that the Attorney General of Ondo State had appealed the judgment and sought a stay of proceeding and execution. The legal opinion conveyed the appellants’ position, indicating that the ministry’s conclusions were based on misconceptions and events that had since transpired in the legal process.
