Only About 5% Of Nigerians Have Over N500,000 In Their Bank Accounts – Finance minister, Wale Edun

According to the Finance Minister, Wale Edun, a mere 5% of the Nigerian population possesses bank account balances exceeding N500,000. Edun emphasized the objective of these microeconomic reforms is to redirect government revenue into the national treasury, ensuring a more equitable distribution of wealth. He noted that a liquidity buildup over the past eight years had disproportionately benefited a select few, leaving the majority of citizens on the sidelines.

President Tinubu is actively working to alleviate the poverty and high cost of living experienced by the masses. As part of these efforts, a palliative package ranging from N25,000 to N15 million is set to be disbursed to households over the next three months. Edun explained that this intervention program, providing N75,000 per household over three months, aims to support 15 million households, effectively reaching 75 million people.

In addressing concerns about transparency and fraud, Edun stated that the program has been revamped to ensure robustness. Beneficiaries will be required to have a National Identification Number (NIN), Bank Verification Number (BVN), or access to a mobile money account, guaranteeing that the funds reach the intended recipients and minimizing the risk of fraudulent activities.

These measures, part of President Tinubu’s corrective actions, aim to create a more inclusive and fair economic environment, redirecting government resources to benefit a broader segment of the Nigerian population.
