The Osun State Police Command has arrested suspected members of the proscribed Yoruba Nation movement.
Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Giwa-Alade, announced the arrests during a suspects’ parade at the Command headquarters in Osogbo on Wednesday, September 18, 2024.
The suspects, aged 61, 63, and 64, were identified as Fagbayi Oluwafemi, Joy Faseyeku, and Alabede Janet, respectively. According to Emmanuel, the trio was arrested at Obada Market in Ikire for conspiracy, unlawful assembly, secession, and treasonable felony while encouraging traders to support the Yoruba Nation movement.
The suspects also urged traders to renounce their allegiance to Nigeria. “On August 27, 2024, around 2:00 PM, through credible intelligence, officers from the Ikire Divisional Police Headquarters arrested Fagbayi Oluwafemi at Obada Market, where he was addressing traders to embrace the Yoruba Nation and denounce Nigeria,” the police spokesperson revealed.
During his speech, Oluwafemi displayed the Yoruba Nation flag and claimed that Nigeria ceased to exist after the 2014 centenary of its amalgamation. Following preliminary investigations, the case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
Further investigation led to the arrest of Joy Faseyeku and Alabede Janet in Osogbo and Ikire, respectively.
Recovered exhibits include an Oodua Nation flag, a tripod stand, a megaphone, two mobile phones, handbills, and a baseball cap bearing the Oodua Nation insignia.
The investigation has concluded, and the suspects have been charged at the Federal High Court.
