Ali Idris Diginsa, the PDP chairman in Jigawa State, expressed his disapproval in response to the State House of Assembly’s recommendation to postpone local government elections until next year.
The House of Assembly had formed an ad hoc committee to review the state’s electoral and local government laws, proposing a 360-day notice period for political parties to prepare for elections.
Diginsa criticized the Assembly’s attempt to alter Section 7(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).
He emphasized that the PDP would not stand by and let the ruling party undermine grassroots governance, as it has allegedly done at the state level.
“This is a deliberate attempt by the Jigawa State House of Assembly to enable the state government to appoint sole administrators for the 27 local government councils. It is unconstitutional and undemocratic,” Diginsa stated.
He further accused the Jigawa State Independent Electoral Commission (JISIEC) of failing to fulfill its legal duties, which include organizing local government elections no later than 90 days before the current councils’ terms expire, as stipulated by Section 64(1) of the Jigawa State Independent Electoral Commission Law.
“We therefore pass a vote of no confidence in JISIEC, the State Assembly, and the government,” Diginsa declared.
The tenure of the current local government chairmen and councillors in Jigawa State is set to expire in July this year.
