Reports indicate that Nigeria’s qualification hopes for the 2026 FIFA World Cup suffered a setback as they played out a draw with the Zimbabwe Warriors. Despite a 74th-minute header that gave Nigeria the lead, 21-year-old Tawanda Chirewa’s last-minute strike in the 90th minute dashed their victory hopes.
In a statement on Wednesday, Obi commended the Super Eagles for their resilience and commitment throughout the game.
“Yesterday (Tuesday), I traveled to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, where I joined other passionate Nigerians in supporting the Super Eagles as they faced the Warriors of Zimbabwe in their sixth match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
“As always, our team showcased the true Nigerian spirit of strength, perseverance, and dedication on the field. Football, and indeed sports, remains a powerful unifying force for our nation amid its challenges. While we may not have secured victory, our players have once again won our hearts with their impressive sportsmanship.”
“I deeply appreciate our national football team and everyone whose efforts and sacrifices have brought us this far in the journey. Our labours were not in vain,” he stated.
