The Governance Advisory Council (GAC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos has intervened in the ongoing controversy surrounding the impeachment of former Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa.

Reports indicate that over the weekend, GAC members convened a crucial closed-door meeting at an undisclosed location to strategize on resolving the crisis.

As the highest decision-making body of the APC in Lagos, the GAC’s resolutions are binding on party members. Led by Pa Tajudeen Olusi, the council counts President Bola Tinubu as its Lifetime Patron.

Obasa’s impeachment on January 13, 2025, over allegations of misconduct and financial misappropriation, has sparked internal divisions within the Lagos APC, with some party leaders opposing his removal.

The high-level meeting, attended by influential APC chieftains, aimed at restoring party unity and preventing further internal strife.

Speaking with Vanguard, an APC chieftain revealed, “On President Tinubu’s directive, the GAC had to step in to prevent the party from plunging into crisis. I can assure you there is no division among GAC members. Behind the scenes, several meetings are ongoing to resolve the issue amicably.”

He further emphasized that the party has established mechanisms for conflict resolution, stating, “It is crucial to prevent the party from fracturing, given the tensions already surfacing in public discourse.”

Regarding speculations that Obasa could face suspension and an investigation, the source dismissed the possibility, asserting, “I don’t see that happening. The APC has an internal process to handle such matters effectively.”

On the likelihood of Obasa defecting to the opposition, he remained confident, saying, “I highly doubt that. Obasa has always been a staunch progressive, deeply committed to democratic principles and loyal to Asiwaju Tinubu since the days of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).”
