Meanwhile, the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has cautioned the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) against implementing sanctions on the Niger Republic.

ECOWAS had recently announced its decision to impose financial sanctions on individuals and entities believed to be aiding the military junta in the West African nation.

These measures are part of ECOWAS’s strategy, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, to pressure the junta to reinstate deposed President Mohamed Bazoum.

The NSCIA, led by Sultan of Sokoto Muhammad Abubakar, issued a statement on Wednesday expressing its concerns about the counterproductive nature of these sanctions and advocating for dialogue.

The Islamic council recognized the junta’s defiance but emphasized the importance of engaging in dialogue instead of relying solely on military intervention.

The NSCIA’s stance echoes the sentiment that military force may not yield positive outcomes for any party involved.

It should be noted that Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Abubakar, had previously participated in an ECOWAS delegation to Niger, led by former military Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar, in an attempt to negotiate with the military junta. However, the negotiations were unfruitful as the junta rejected the delegation’s appeals.
