Investigations have revealed mounting dissatisfaction among key party members, with many already making plans to defect to rival political parties. This development follows reports of significant internal strife that has weakened the party’s unity since the 2023 general elections.

One of the most notable defections came from Chijioke Edeoga, the Labour Party’s 2023 governorship candidate, who officially rejoined the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday. Edeoga was warmly received at the PDP secretariat in GRA, Enugu, where he expressed his gratitude to Governor Peter Mbah and the leadership of his Eha-Amufu Ward III, Isi-Uzo Local Government Area, and the state PDP for facilitating his smooth return.

Expressing his appreciation, Edeoga said, “I am happy to be here. I want to especially thank the governor of Enugu State. This development could not have happened without his political support.” He pledged renewed loyalty to the PDP and called on party members to back Governor Mbah’s development initiatives in Enugu State.

Mass Defections Hit Labour Party
Edeoga’s exit follows a series of recent departures from the Labour Party. Six members of the Enugu State House of Assembly, who were elected under the LP platform, have also defected to the PDP. The defectors include:

  • Ejike Eze (Igbo-Eze North I)

  • Johnson Ugwu (Enugu North)

  • Princess Ugwu (Enugu South Rural)

  • Pius Ezeugwu (Nsukka West)

  • Amuka Williams (Igbo-Etiti East)

  • Osita Eze (Oji River)

These defections have further weakened the Labour Party’s influence in the state legislature.

Responding to the situation, Assembly spokesman and LP member, Harrison Ogara, acknowledged that the defectors acted within their rights, simply stating, “They have freedom of movement.”

With its gubernatorial candidate and multiple lawmakers leaving the party, the future of the Labour Party in Enugu State remains uncertain. Insiders suggest that more defections may be on the horizon unless the party leadership swiftly addresses the internal crises.
