The Senate has decided to urgently convene an emergency meeting with labor leaders to address the ongoing nationwide strike by the organized labor, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC)…CONTINUE READING

This resolution was prompted by the assault on NLC President Joe Ajaero on November 1 in Imo State, which led to the strike affecting various official activities across the country.
During Wednesday’s plenary, Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central) presented a motion condemning the attack on Ajaero and calling for the strike to be called off.
The motion, presented by Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, highlighted the constitutional rights of the NLC president as a Nigerian and an indigene of Imo State to participate in the electioneering process without facing violence.
The Senate expressed concern that the strike, initiated since November 14, is closely linked to the assault on the NLC president during the electioneering campaign in Imo State.
The motion emphasized that while some of the NLC’s demands are related to workers’ welfare, others are connected to alleged political involvement by the NLC president in Imo State.
The lawmakers voiced apprehension that allowing the strike to persist could have severe consequences for Nigerians and lead to a potential economic collapse.
Several senators, including Ali Ndume (APC, Borno South) and Adams Oshiomhole (APC, Edo North), condemned the attack on the NLC president but emphasized that the entire country should not suffer for an alleged offense committed in one state.
