In a statement released on Wednesday in Abuja, Benson Upah, the Head of Information and Public Affairs of the NLC, urged Nigerians to dismiss the narrative suggesting that the organized labor strike is centered on a private matter.

Upah emphasized that the “private matter” narrative propagated by government agents aims to divert attention from the actual issues at hand.

He clarified that the NLC and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria are taking a stand against acts of violence and impunity committed by or under the supervision of the Nigeria Police Force.

The statement cited instances of forceful seizure of the offices of NURTW, RTEAN, and NUPENG as examples of reprehensible impunity that the strike protests against.

Furthermore, Upah highlighted the arrest, beating, and torture of Comrade Joe Ajaero as an escalation in the culture of harassment and intimidation.

He asserted that labor has no apologies for resisting such developments through the ongoing strike.

Upah underscored the importance of personal liberty in a popular democracy and warned against the closing of democratic space.

The statement demanded that the government address and prevent the growing culture of harassment, intimidation, violence, and terror.

The NLC expressed its commitment to persist in the strike until the government commits to governing in accordance with the prescribed laws of the land.
