The NLC, on the other hand, has declared a two-day warning strike set to take place tomorrow and Wednesday, with the possibility of escalating to a “total shutdown” after 14 days, as announced by its President, Joe Ajaero.

The TUC’s perspective is that there is no immediate need for a strike as discussions with the Federal Government regarding worker palliatives are still ongoing. According to the TUC, the strike could potentially put the interests of the masses at risk and may not be the most suitable course of action at this time.

In various states, labor leaders have expressed differing stances on joining the strike. In states like Ogun and Niger, labor leaders have ruled out participation, while in Oyo and Sokoto, they have insisted on a work boycott as directed by the NLC. Some governors have taken steps to avert the strike, either through meetings with labor leaders or by reaffirming their commitment to alleviating the effects of subsidy removal.

Today, the Labor Minister, Simon Lalong, is expected to outline the Federal Government’s measures aimed at preventing the warning strike.

The NLC’s decision to call for the strike comes in response to what it perceives as the Federal Government’s failure to engage in dialogue with organized labor stakeholders regarding measures to mitigate the impact of petrol subsidy removal on the vulnerable population.
