The scandals involved renowned musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshall, popularly known as KWAM 1 or K1 De Ultimate, and passenger Comfort Emmanson.
Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, disclosed the government’s resolutions regarding the cases of KWAM 1, Comfort Emmanson, aviation security, and airport officials.
PRESS STATEMENT: WITHDRAWAL OF CRIMINAL COMPLAINT AGAINST MS. COMFORT EMMANSON AND RELATED ACTIONS
-
Over the past 48 hours, I have consulted extensively with key stakeholders in the aviation sector, as well as those directly connected to the recent incidents involving unruly behavior at Nigeria’s airports.
-
While regrettable, these events have provided valuable lessons for all parties involved and heightened public awareness about airport security protocols. If nothing else, they have emphasized the importance of proper conduct within the aviation space.
-
From all evidence available to the Ministry and the public, both the offending passengers and airline staff committed clear wrongs. None of the parties can continue to claim injury without recognizing their own share of culpability.
-
After careful review, and considering appeals from respected individuals alongside the remorse expressed by the actors involved, the following decisions have been made:
CASE OF IBOM AIR AND COMFORT EMMANSON
-
Following discussions with Ibom Air, the airline has agreed to withdraw its complaint against Ms. Comfort Emmanson over the August 10, 2025, incident. During police questioning in the presence of her lawyer, she expressed deep remorse for her actions.
-
Upon the formal withdrawal of the complaint, the Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, and the Police Prosecutor will expedite her release from Kirikiri Prison within the week.
-
The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has also agreed—after an appeal from the Ministry—to lift the lifetime flying ban imposed on her. Details will be made public by AON.
CASE OF VALUEJET AND KWAM 1 (WASIU AYINDE MARSHALL)
-
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) will reduce KWAM 1’s flight ban to one month. Additionally, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) will partner with him to serve as an ambassador for proper airport security protocol.
-
In light of his public apology, the NCAA will also withdraw its criminal complaint against the musician.
-
For Captain Oluranti Ogoyi and First Officer Ivan Oloba of ValueJet, their licenses will be restored after a one-month suspension, following mandatory professional re-assessment. NCAA will release further details.
AIRLINE OPERATORS, AVIATION & GOVERNMENT AGENCIES
-
Relevant aviation bodies, in collaboration with other agencies, will hold a retreat next week to retrain aviation security staff on managing unruly passengers and defusing tense situations. The session will be open to the press for transparency.
-
Airlines will also have dedicated sessions focusing on staff behavior and customer relations.
FINAL REMARKS
These decisions were taken purely on compassionate grounds, not in response to political pressure or public sentiment. The government remains committed to strict enforcement of aviation laws and is sending a clear signal: safety and security in the aviation sector are non-negotiable. This clemency marks the end of leniency—future violations will be dealt with firmly.
