Shehu Sani Exposes Little-Known Budget Padding Practices Among Legislators....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Former Kaduna lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, shed light on the intricate maneuvers employed by members of the National Assembly in manipulating Nigeria’s budgets, amidst ongoing allegations of budget padding within the Senate.

The controversy emerged when now-suspended Bauchi Central lawmaker, Abdul Ningi, raised concerns regarding the allocation of N3.7 trillion in the budget, alleging that these funds were not allocated to any specific projects. Ningi’s assertions, made during a recent interview with BBC Hausa Service, fueled discussions surrounding budgetary practices within the Senate.

In response to these allegations, the Senate took action by suspending Ningi and barring his participation in Senate activities. Senator Shehu Sani took to X platform to demystify the concept of budget padding, elucidating that it involves the manipulation of budgetary allocations by either inflating project costs or introducing entirely new projects into the budget.

Sani provided an illustrative example, stating that budget padding could entail scenarios where a minister requests funding for a specific number of items at a particular cost, but ends up receiving a higher quantity of items or inflated costs without justification.

This revelation comes at a time of heightened scrutiny over governmental spending practices, highlighting the need for transparency and accountability within Nigeria’s legislative processes.
