The gathering included the five Southeast state governors, leaders of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo socio-cultural organization, and other prominent figures such as former Senate President Adolphus Wabara, Senator Ifeanyi Uba, former Chief of Army Staff Azubuike Ihejirika, former Inspector General of Police Mike Okiro, Minister of Labour Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Senator Uche Ekwunife, Minister of Science and Technology Uche Nnaji, as well as clergy members, among others.
Prominent individuals including Prof Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Prof Charles Soludo, Anyim Pius Anyim, and Igboezue addressed the challenges facing the Igbo community.
In a video message, the Director-General of the World Trade Organization, Okonjo Iweala, attributed the underdevelopment of the South-East region to internal conflicts and divisions among its residents.
She emphasized the need for unity and collaboration among the people of the South-East to address challenges and leverage the region’s potential for economic and social development.
Okonjo-Iweala encouraged the South-East to explore its talents and opportunities, highlighting the importance of collective effort and cooperation in achieving progress and development.
She also acknowledged infrastructure gaps in the region but stressed that the biggest challenge faced by the South-East was its own internal divisions and lack of unity. She called for a concerted effort to overcome these divisions and work together for the region’s benefit.
