The protest stemmed from the minister’s decision to lock out certain staff members who arrived late to work on Thursday.

Umahi, who arrived at the ministry complex ahead of some directors and staff in the morning, denied them access to their offices. During an address to the protesters, Umahi expressed his regret over locking out the ministry’s staff.

He said, “I have observed that some workers arrive at work as late as 12 o’clock or 1 o’clock. I have had to direct some of them to meet with the Permanent Secretary to address this issue.”

“Just a week ago, I convened a meeting with all the directors and emphasized the importance of discipline. I come to work, request files, and some staff are not yet in the office to provide the files.”

“At 3 o’clock, when I ask for files, some workers have already left. I cannot function without you, and you cannot function without me.”

“Today, I arrived at work at 9:30 am with a significant number of files to process, and less than 5 percent of the staff were present.”

“I informed the Head of Human Resources that I needed to engage with the workers, and I decided to come and address you at the gate. I observed that you were engaged in friendly discussions that seemed like a confrontation.”

“When you treat those under your supervision well, it is not a favor to them; it is a favor to yourself. What you sow is what you will reap.”

“If any of you felt offended this morning, I offer my apologies.”

“I implore you to support me; I am not fighting for my sake. I need your support to ensure that when we pay contractors, they show us respect.”

“We are united, and I want to assure you that I care for you. I want you to stand by my side. Let’s fight this battle together because it’s a battle we must win.”

“We need to reset this country. This aligns with the renewed hope agenda of Mr. President.”
