This commitment was established during a strategic meeting at the UN House in Abuja, involving the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, United Nations agencies, and other development partners.
The meeting aimed to foster synergy and a coordinated approach for sustainable solutions to Nigeria’s humanitarian challenges.
Dr. Edu disclosed that the agreement entails the annual raising of five billion dollars to support the country’s humanitarian efforts.
Key resolutions from the meeting include:
- Commitment by the Nigerian government and development partners to raise five billion dollars annually for the Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Trust Fund in Nigeria.
- Hosting the African Humanitarian Summit as a follow-up to the 2016 World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul.
- Conducting a joint field assessment by the Nigerian government and other partners.
- Establishing a Quarterly humanitarian coordination meeting for comprehensive reports on Nigerian humanitarian situations.
- Creating a Nigerian Humanitarian Dashboard, among other initiatives.
Dr. Edu conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s appreciation to UN agencies and partners for their significant contributions to Nigeria’s humanitarian response, urging them to maintain their efforts.
She emphasized the importance of stakeholders working collaboratively to ensure a coordinated approach for better outcomes.
