Stop Harassing Our Contractors! FG Says ₦152 Billion Already Paid

The disclosure, made in a statement by the Federal Ministry of Finance, comes amid ongoing protests by local contractors under the All Indigenous Contractors Association of Nigeria (AICAN), who have been demanding payment of outstanding entitlements.

While acknowledging the financial strain and delays in settling remaining balances, the Ministry urged contractors to continue engaging in dialogue as a constructive path toward resolving pending issues.

The statement also highlighted that Ministry staff have faced harassment and intimidation from some contractors, and appealed for calm and civility in interactions.

The Ministry stressed that all payments follow rigorous verification procedures to protect public funds and maintain accountability.

“Payment for contracts undergoes multiple verification stages in accordance with existing laws and regulations, ensuring taxpayer money is safeguarded and expenditures remain transparent. We also appeal for ongoing dialogue and engagement to effectively resolve all conflicts,” the statement read.

Contractors were assured that all outstanding payment requests will continue to be processed in line with due procedures and handled consistently and in a timely manner.

“We reaffirm our support and openness to constructive dialogue with contractors and urge them to respect the processes and personnel of the Federal Ministry of Finance, who have endured intimidation and harassment,” the Ministry added.

The statement further revealed that the federal government has proposed allocating ₦1.8 trillion in the 2026 budget to settle outstanding payments for capital projects executed during the 2024 fiscal year. Of this amount, ₦100 billion has been earmarked specifically for indigenous contractors, many of whom have expressed concern over prolonged delays and worsening financial conditions.

Jackson Nwosu, President of AICAN, has emphasized that the government has not fulfilled previous payment promises, warning that protests will continue until all demands are met.
