Tension In The Sahel: Nigeria’s Emergency Landing Meets Hostile Payback From Burkina Faso
Security expert, Zagazola Makama, has strongly criticized the continued detention of 10 Nigerian Air Force personnel in Burkina Faso, alleging that the country’s ruling junta is exploiting the emergency landing of a NAF C-130 aircraft as retaliation against Nigeria.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement on , Makama argued that the aircraft’s precautionary landing in Bobo-Dioulasso—which fully adhered to international aviation safety standards—should not have resulted in the crew being held, describing the situation as proof of “petty retaliation, insecurity, and reckless conduct by the Burkinabè authorities.”
He emphasized that under International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) protocols, any aircraft experiencing technical difficulties is permitted to land safely in any airspace without hostility, and the crew must be protected.
“The decision to escalate a routine safety procedure into a diplomatic confrontation is childish and vindictive,” he stated.
While the Nigerian Air Force confirmed that the emergency landing was executed in line with global aviation procedures and that the crew initially received a cordial reception, Makama said diplomatic sources now report that they are still being detained unjustly.
He linked the development to political motives, particularly Nigeria’s recent intervention that helped prevent a coup in the Benin Republic—a move that reportedly angered the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), which includes Burkina Faso.
“This is not a misunderstanding. It is a deliberate act of vengeance aimed at Nigeria,” he said, warning that the junta’s actions pose a threat to aviation safety worldwide.
Makama cautioned that weaponizing ICAO-protected emergency landings for political reasons could discourage pilots from declaring emergencies, thereby endangering lives.
He urged the Nigerian government to summon Burkina Faso’s ambassador and push for international condemnation, insisting on the immediate release of the detained NAF personnel.
“The global community must not allow a reckless junta to turn an aviation safety issue into a hostile political attack against Nigeria,” he added.
