President Bola Tinubu has vehemently condemned the recent violence in Plateau State, calling on the state leadership to work towards a permanent solution to the ongoing communal clashes.
The latest attack, which occurred early Monday morning in the Zikke and Kakpa communities in Bassa Local Government Area, claimed at least 51 lives and left many others injured. This follows a deadly wave of violence just two weeks earlier in another region of the state, which also resulted in multiple deaths.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported last week that gunmen had killed at least 52 people and displaced nearly 2,000 individuals during a series of attacks in Plateau, an area long plagued by conflicts between farmers and herders.
According to local residents, 51 bodies were recovered from the Zikke and Kimakpa villages in Bassa district, with several others reported injured in the aftermath of Monday’s attack.
In response, President Tinubu expressed outrage, stating, “We cannot allow this devastation and the cycle of retaliatory violence to continue. Enough is enough.” He issued a statement through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, titled “President Tinubu condemns latest attack in Plateau, urges Governor Mutfwang to resolve underlying communal issues.”
The President extended his heartfelt condolences to Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, the state government, and the people of the region, and expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life.
Tinubu emphasized that the ongoing violence between communities in Plateau, driven by ethnic and religious misunderstandings, must come to an end. He called on Governor Mutfwang to take decisive action to address the root causes of the conflict and work towards lasting peace.
“It is no longer sufficient to only address the criminal elements behind these attacks,” Tinubu stated. “The leadership in Plateau, particularly Governor Mutfwang, must confront the deep-seated issues fueling this long-standing crisis.”
He stressed that the problems have persisted for over two decades and can no longer be ignored. “It is time to deal with them fairly and find a permanent solution. I have discussed these challenges with the governor and provided suggestions for lasting peace,” the President added.
Tinubu also highlighted the importance of promoting unity and harmony across the state’s diverse ethnic and religious groups to ensure long-term stability.
