This investigation was initiated through a motion introduced by Senate Leader Simon Mwadkwon (Plateau North) and Senator Victor Umeh (Anambra Central). The motion, titled “Immediate Necessity to Investigate the Unlawful Killings and Incarceration of Over 250 Nigerians in Ethiopia,” called upon the Committees on Diaspora and Foreign Affairs to collaborate with the federal government in promptly forming a committee to visit Ethiopia and investigate the situation concerning Nigerians in the country.
Additionally, the motion urged the federal government to instruct the Ethiopian Embassy to cooperate with the Senate Committees on Diaspora and Foreign Affairs in addressing the challenges faced by Nigerians detained in Ethiopia.
Mwadkwon, while presenting the motion, expressed concern about video clips circulating on social media that depict Nigerians being held in Ethiopian maximum-security prisons, facing grave dangers. He emphasized the urgency of intervention and a thorough investigation into these alarming activities, highlighting that this situation is occurring despite the global call for unity among nations.
