Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timi Frank, has cautioned Senate President Godswill Akpabio against inciting a Kenyan-style uprising in Nigeria. This warning came in response to Akpabio’s recent statement that the parliament would approve a request for a new presidential aircraft if needed.
In a statement issued on Monday, Frank condemned Akpabio’s comment as highly condescending and degrading. He emphasized that one of the primary roles of the parliament is to provide checks and balances on other branches of government. Frank accused Akpabio of deviating from this duty by encouraging the executive to make expenditures irrespective of the economic burden on taxpayers.
Frank asserted that while Akpabio might choose to be at President Bola Tinubu’s beck and call, he must not reduce the National Assembly to a mere rubber stamp for the executive branch. He criticized Akpabio for his audacity in undermining legislative procedures and for his disrespectful remarks that insult the democratic process and the Nigerian public.
“Akpabio can choose to be President Bola Tinubu’s cheerleader, praise singer, and errand boy but he must not reduce the National Assembly to an organ extending anticipatory approvals for requests yet to be made by the executive and justifying the same,” Frank stated.
He urged Akpabio to focus on his constitutional role by ensuring thorough scrutiny of financial bills to prevent wasteful spending and to avoid belittling Nigerians and taxpayers. Frank also noted that the age of an aircraft does not necessarily determine its safety or airworthiness, as regular maintenance and inspections are key to ensuring operational safety.
Frank questioned the allocation of approximately N214 billion for the maintenance of the Presidential Fleet from 1999 to date. He warned Akpabio to be mindful of potential uprisings similar to those in Senegal and Kenya, where citizens protested against government actions, leading to significant political repercussions.
Frank concluded by urging Akpabio to act within the limits of his constitutional role and to be conscious of the potential consequences of his actions on the stability and democracy of Nigeria.
