The attack struck the IRIB’s main complex in Tehran’s District Three, amid surging hostilities between Israel and Iran. This strike follows a growing pattern of Israeli targeting of media infrastructures in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon.

During the live broadcast, popular anchor Sahar Emami was on air when a sudden explosion rocked the studio, sending smoke and debris billowing across the set. Before fleeing, Emami declared, “Aggression against the homeland… and the truth,” as someone in the background shouted, “God is greatest.”

Despite being visibly shaken, Emami reportedly resumed broadcasting moments after the blast.

The Israeli military had reportedly issued a warning prior to the strike. Confirming the operation, Defense Minister Israel Katz said:

“The Iranian propaganda and incitement mouthpiece is on its way to disappear.”

An Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) statement claimed the building was being used for military purposes under the guise of media activity—though no evidence was provided to support the claim.

In a swift and furious response, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei condemned the airstrike, branding it a “war crime” and calling for immediate action from the United Nations Security Council.

“The genocidal aggressor must be stopped now,” Baghaei posted on X, also accusing Israel of being the world’s leading killer of journalists.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) expressed alarm, noting that 178 journalists have been killed in Gaza by Israeli forces since October 2023—making it the deadliest period for journalists ever recorded.

“We are appalled by Israel’s attack on Iranian state TV… This bloodshed must end now,” the CPJ said in a post.

IRIB Director Peyman Jebelli claimed the bombing was a direct response to the network’s key role in Iran’s ongoing “hybrid war” with Israel, saying:

“Iranian media are precisely targeting the core of the enemy’s narrative strategy. Our staff remain committed to their mission.”

Journalist Younes Shadlou, reporting from the bombed site, feared that several of his colleagues may have been trapped inside.

“Despite evacuation warnings, many stayed behind to expose the true face of the Zionist regime,” he told reporters.
