Why Niger Delta Militants Are Not Kidnapping Their People – Gumi....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

A Kaduna-based Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has articulated that the absence of widespread arms possession among Niger Delta militants is a key factor preventing them from engaging in the kidnapping of their own families and community members. Gumi contrasted this with the situation in the Northern region, where he highlighted that bandits, predominantly comprising pastoralists, resort to such actions due to perceived collaboration between their targets and security forces.

In a recent interview with Nigeria Info FM, Gumi emphasized the marginalized status of bandits, lacking access to essential services like education, healthcare, and clean water. He advocated for a similar approach to the amnesty granted to militants in the Niger Delta during the tenure of President Umaru Yar’Adua, asserting that such a gesture from the government is essential for restoring peace in the North.

Gumi reiterated that bandits, akin to the militants in the Niger Delta, are driven by grievances stemming from governmental neglect of their respective regions, which are vital to the nation’s economic prosperity. He underscored the need to address these underlying issues to quell the insurgency effectively.

Moreover, Gumi disclosed in the interview that security forces possess knowledge of bandits’ hideouts in the Northern regions, indicating their involvement in negotiation efforts with the armed groups. This revelation suggests a nuanced understanding of the bandits’ activities and locations among security personnel.

Gumi’s statements shed light on the complex socio-economic and political dynamics fueling insecurity in the Northern region and advocate for comprehensive measures, including dialogue and amnesty, to address the root causes and facilitate lasting peace.
