A teacher at Government Science Secondary School in Donga local government area of Taraba State was stabbed by a newly recruited soldier after an altercation over disciplinary action against the soldier’s brother for arriving late to school.
Pavalis Yebduya Joshua, who serves as both a teacher and exam officer at the school, encountered trouble when he insisted on disciplining SSS 2 student Ishaq Baraya despite objections from the soldier, Barau Ishaq. Barau Ishaq, newly recruited into the military, refused to allow his brother to be punished, claiming he had brought him to school.
The disagreement escalated into a heated exchange, during which Joshua compared the situation to a checkpoint scenario, asserting his authority based on seniority in age and education. Angered by Joshua’s stance, Barau Ishaq left and returned 20 minutes later accompanied by two others—one in military attire and another in civilian army camouflage.
In the ensuing chaos, students fled as the group searched for Joshua. When they found him, Barau Ishaq attempted to stab Joshua, who managed to evade the knife multiple times but sustained cuts to his palm and fingers in the process. Colleagues and students gathered as the assailants fled, prompting the school principal to report the incident to the police.
Law enforcement responded by taking Joshua and the abandoned soldier to the station for statements and medical attention. However, the situation escalated further when Barau Ishaq returned with a Special Forces team, causing more panic and injuries among the students.
Joshua, now seeking justice, has appealed to the state government, Police, Department of State Services (DSS), and Nigerian Army for intervention. Despite assurances to cover medical expenses, no action has been taken so far. Neither the Nigerian Army nor the state government has issued a statement regarding the incident.
