The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced that Nigeria has made remarkable strides in the telecommunications sector, achieving 79.65% tele-density and 48.81% broadband penetration as of May 2025.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of the NCC, Aminu Maida, made this known on Thursday during a Stakeholders Forum on the General Authorisation Framework for the Nigerian telecoms industry.

Maida highlighted that the sector’s transformation, spurred by its liberalization, has steadily advanced over the past 24 years. He attributed this growth to the rapid adoption of mobile technologies, rising data usage, and the growing demand for digital services.

However, he warned that continued progress requires a regulatory framework that is not just adaptive, but also supportive.

“We are at a pivotal moment where disruptive innovations are reshaping the communications ecosystem,” Maida stated. “This demands a regulatory approach that facilitates, rather than restricts, innovation.”

He emphasized that this goal underpins the NCC’s new initiative—the General Authorisation Framework—which introduces a more flexible and responsive licensing system, designed to accommodate emerging services not currently covered by existing license structures.

Still, Maida insisted that regulation alone cannot ensure success. He called on all stakeholders—including Mobile Network Operators, service providers, infrastructure firms, OEMs, startups, civil society, and academia—to actively contribute to the framework’s development and implementation.

“Your perspectives, ideas, and cooperation are crucial to refining this model and making it work for Nigeria,” he said.

Looking ahead, Maida stressed the importance of digital inclusion, stating that everyone must be carried along—particularly youth and women—as Nigeria’s digital economy continues to unfold.

“Our shared communications infrastructure is the backbone of innovation, inclusion, and economic growth,” he said. “To keep up the momentum, we must be bold, united, and determined to build a resilient and forward-looking ecosystem.”

He concluded by saying the General Authorisation Framework will open new doors for experimentation, business entry, and sustainable growth in Nigeria’s tech space.
