Regarding James, he was charged as follows: “That on or about May 2023, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court in Kaduna, you, Redeem James (aka Beaulah Nic), committed an offense by falsely assuming the identity of Beaulah Nic (a white woman) on Instagram, and in that assumed character, deceitfully obtained the sum of $250 (Two Hundred and Fifty USD) from Till Marcos, thereby contravening Section 308 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law of 2017, punishable under Section 309 of the same Law.”
As for Okoye, the particulars of his count were as follows: “Chisom Okoye (aka Kelvin Mark Williams) and others currently at large, between January and May 2023, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court in Kaduna, committed an offense by falsely assuming the identity of Kelvin Mark (a white man from Houston), Texas, USA, using the Gmail account km5464158@gmail.com and the social media application Instagram, with the intention to deceive several unsuspecting victims, including zeliaquevedo, for the purpose of executing a love scam. This pretense, which you knew to be false, is in violation of Section 142(1) of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017.”
Both defendants pleaded guilty to their respective charges, leading the prosecuting counsel, K.S. Ogunlade, to request the court to convict them accordingly.
In response, Justice Isiaka delivered the verdict, convicting James and sentencing him to two years imprisonment or a fine of N150,000. He was also ordered to pay $250 in restitution.
Chisom, on the other hand, received a conviction and a three-year prison sentence, with the option of a fine amounting to N150,000. Additionally, he was required to forfeit one Samsung Galaxy phone to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
