Soyinka highlighted the distressing state of affairs where even a simple disagreement during an election can result in individuals being labeled on social media with unfounded accusations. He underscored the prevalence of accusations related to ethnic phobia and expressed astonishment at the power-driven mindset that refuses to acknowledge the possibility of electoral defeat.

The investiture ceremony, attended by notable figures such as the Alake and Paramount ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, became a platform for Soyinka to call on the nation’s intellectual community to rescue the country from the deteriorating condition of social media.

He urged individuals to move beyond demonizing opposing groups and focus on presenting their facts for careful examination. Soyinka distanced himself from social media, asserting that, in his view, barbarians have taken over, diminishing the intellectual quotient that once validated social media in other societies. Despite the challenges, he expressed confidence in the community of intellectual minds and creativity, believing that they can rescue Nigeria from the current state of social media monstrosity.
