In a bid to combat soaring inflation and alleviate economic strain, the Nigerian government has announced a bold strategy to temporarily suspend tariffs and import duties on essential commodities such as food, raw materials for production, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural inputs.
Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, revealed this groundbreaking initiative during a recent presentation of the proposed Accelerated Stabilisation and Advancement Plan (ASAP), aimed at steering Nigeria out of its economic woes.
This move comes as headline and food inflation rates soar to alarming levels of 33.69 percent and 40.53 percent, respectively, posing severe challenges to the purchasing power of Nigerians.
Edun emphasized that these fiscal measures, once implemented, would provide much-needed relief to the nation’s economy. The suspension of import duties and tariffs will cover staple food items, manufacturing inputs, agricultural necessities like fertilizers and seedlings, pharmaceutical products, and more.
Additionally, millers will be authorized to import paddy rice duty-free for six months, along with a suspension of Value Added Tax (VAT) on various essential items for the remainder of the year 2024.
Reacting to this development, Muda Yusuf, Director of the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise, hailed the move as a crucial step towards curbing inflationary pressures and addressing economic concerns in the real sector. He urged swift implementation of the plan to foster economic progress.
This announcement comes amid ongoing discussions regarding a new minimum wage in Nigeria. While Organised Labour recently suspended a nationwide strike after securing commitments for a higher minimum wage, negotiations between the government and labor unions continue, with various proposals ranging from N60,000 to N494,000.
As the nation grapples with economic challenges, stakeholders emphasize the importance of implementing robust measures to uplift the economy and improve living standards for all Nigerians.
