Breaking: Abuja Protesters Met With Tear Gas As Tensions Escalate (Photos)

According to SaharaReporters, police were seen deploying tear gas canisters and ammunition at peaceful protesters advocating against the difficulties experienced under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. As a result, protesters fled for safety in the Jabi and Utako areas of the FCT amid the chaos.

Meanwhile, in Lagos, demonstrators gathered at Ikeja Underbridge to mark Nigeria’s 2024 Independence Day with their own protest against the country’s economic challenges. The #FearlessOctober1 demonstration occurred under heavy security, with a significant law enforcement presence.

Security personnel included police officers, members of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, and officials from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olanrewaju Ishola, was on-site to oversee the demonstration.

Protesters chanted solidarity songs and displayed placards with messages such as “Reverse electricity tariff now,” “End all attacks on democratic rights,” “Reduce petrol price to ₦197 per litre; end scarcity,” and “Profit soars while people suffer.”

Civil society groups like the Take It Back Movement, the Education Rights Campaign, the Coalition for Revolution, and the Socialist Workers League led the protests. This event marks the second major demonstration in two months as Nigerians continue to express their frustrations over deteriorating economic conditions.
