Thirteen Chinese nationals have been arrested by the Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for engaging in illegal mining activities in Ilorin, Kwara State. The arrests were made on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, at the Government Reserved Area (GRA) in Ilorin following credible intelligence on their illegal activities, which included illegal mining and non-payment of royalties to the Federal Government. The suspects, consisting of 12 males and one female, were apprehended in accordance with Section 1(8) (b) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act Cap M17, 1983. Their names are Guo Ya Wang (36), Lizli Hui (42), Guo Jian Rong (36), Lizh Shen Xianian (37), Lishow Wu (26), Guo Pan (38), Lia Meiyu (53), Guo Kai Quan (36), Lin Pan (50), Ma Jan (38), Wendy Wei Suqin (31), Li Zhinguo Wei (29), and Xie Zhinguo (53).
The investigation revealed that the suspects were workers of a Chinese company called W. Mining Global Service Limited, located at Olayinka in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State. The company was found to be using illegally mined granite to produce marble for local sale in Nigeria. It was discovered that some of the suspects were working without valid work permits and had entered Nigeria on visitor’s visas. CONTINUE READING
Further investigations into illegal mining activities in Kwara State have shown that the operators have multiple illegal mining sites across the 16 Local Government Areas of the state. The EFCC has been working diligently to address this issue and has previously arrested numerous illegal mining operators. The agency considers illegal mining to be a grave threat to the local and national economy.
Following the conclusion of investigations, the suspects will be arraigned in court. The EFCC remains resolute in its fight against corruption and is committed to dismantling illegal mining operations across the country.
