Chief David Briggs, a former Commissioner for Water Resources in Rivers State, who was present at the peace meeting, alleges that President Tinubu intimidated Governor Fubara into signing the eight-point peace resolution. According to Briggs, Governor Fubara signed the document under duress, citing indirect threats issued by President Tinubu during the meeting.

Briggs disclosed this revelation at a time when many of the agreed-upon measures have yet to be implemented.

The G27, comprising 27 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) legislators who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), withdrew their impeachment notice against Governor Fubara in a Wednesday sitting. However, efforts to retract the court order obtained by the governor, preventing the lawmakers from proceeding with the impeachment, were unsuccessful. The court has rescheduled the hearing for January 31, 2024.

Briggs Details Alleged Coercion Chief Briggs, who attended the meeting with other Rivers elders, asserted that President Tinubu issued implicit threats during the encounter. Briggs claimed that the President warned of consequences if Governor Fubara refused to endorse and adhere to the contents of the document, described as a “presidential proclamation.”

Briggs highlighted the shock among those present, including Adokiye Amaesimaka, and mentioned a question posed to President Tinubu regarding the defection of 25 or 27 Assembly members from PDP to APC without consulting their constituencies. The response, according to Briggs, was clear but alarming.

Governor Fubara’s Response and PDP’s Warning Governor Fubara, despite the controversy, affirmed his commitment to implementing the peace agreement. The state Commissioner for Information, Joe Johnson, reiterated this stance on Wednesday, emphasizing that the governor had signed the agreement willingly.

Meanwhile, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP issued a warning to party leaders against making unguarded statements that could tarnish the party’s image. The NWC expressed displeasure at the conduct of certain leaders, citing Sule Lamido’s public statement as an example. Lamido had criticized the PDP’s handling of the Rivers crisis on social media, prompting the NWC to caution against actions detrimental to the party’s cohesion.
