Presidential aides, speaking confidentially to Punch on Tuesday, confirmed that the decision followed a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.
“Yes. Egbetokun is gone,” one aide said.
Another aide added, “A formal statement is being prepared as we speak. The announcement will be made soon.”
Sources revealed that Tinubu asked Egbetokun to step aside during the meeting. Efforts to get confirmation from the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, were unsuccessful, as calls and messages went unanswered. Likewise, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, did not respond to requests for official comment.
Meanwhile, insiders within the police hierarchy hinted that a successor may have been identified. One anonymous source said that Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu had been contacted regarding the role.
“He has been contacted, but we are all waiting for official confirmation, which should come later today,” the source added.
Egbetokun was appointed IGP on June 19, 2023, by President Tinubu. His continued tenure became a matter of public debate in 2024 after he reached the mandatory retirement age of 60 on September 4. However, his term was extended following an amendment to the Police Act, which allows an appointed IGP to serve a fixed four-year term.
