Dangote Refinery Breaks Silence: No Fuel Scarcity Despite NUPENG Strike
A spokesman for Dangote Refinery, Anthony Chiejina, assured Nigerians on Tuesday that there is no cause for panic over fuel supply despite the ongoing NUPENG strike.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The strike, which began on Monday and has since gained support from unions within and outside Nigeria, coincides with the refinery’s move to employ its own drivers for fuel distribution.
“There is no fuel shortage; everything is moving smoothly,” Chiejina stated, noting that negotiations are still ongoing between the union, the government, and the company.
Before the launch of the 650,000-barrel-per-day Dangote Refinery last year, Nigeria relied almost entirely on petrol imports despite being a top oil producer. Critics have long blamed this on years of neglect and mismanagement of government-owned refineries.
Since operations began, the refinery has reduced petrol prices for consumers and disrupted entrenched players in the oil sector, which has been riddled with corruption for decades. However, its rapid dominance has also raised concerns over monopoly, given its backing by Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote.
Last month, the refinery announced plans to deploy thousands of compressed natural gas-powered trucks to distribute petrol nationwide, but the rollout has been delayed due to logistics challenges.
NUPENG, meanwhile, accuses Dangote of recruiting drivers under anti-union conditions—claims the company has firmly denied.
