In the letter, concerns were raised by Ozekhome about the substandard conditions of Kanu’s detention at the Department of State Services (DSS). To address this issue, he requested that a Magistrate appointed by the Chief Judge of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory inspect Nnamdi Kanu’s detention center.

In a similar vein, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, another counsel representing Kanu, issued a statement following a recent meeting with Kanu at the DSS detention facility.

Ejiofor conveyed Kanu’s gratitude to those advocating for his release and clarified the unique aspects of his case. He emphasized that the Court of Appeal’s judgment on October 13, 2022, declared Kanu effectively discharged and barred any further trial or detention. Consequently, there are no pending charges against him in any court.

Ejiofor highlighted that Nnamdi Kanu does not intend to plead with the federal government for his release, as the pronouncement from the Court of Appeal is definitive.

Instead, he urged individuals of goodwill to call for the Supreme Court to promptly schedule a hearing for the appeal filed by the Federal Government, in accordance with the Criminal Appeals Practice Directions of the Supreme Court.

A visit was made to Nnamdi Kanu on August 28, 2023, by his legal team, led by Prof. Mike Ozekhome, SAN. The purpose of the visit was to update Kanu on the ongoing efforts to address concerns regarding his well-being and the failure of the SSS to provide his medical records.
