A video circulating online showed several men, identified as terminal officials, attempting to seize the journalist’s camera during the coverage.
The TVC News crew resisted the attempt, resulting in a brief standoff at the scene.
According to the television station, other journalists present were also intimidated and prevented from recording the damaged facility.
“Tension flared at the Kugbo Bus Terminal after officials attempted to seize a camera belonging to TVC News during coverage of damage at the terminal,” the station stated. “Our correspondent was confronted, and attempts were made to confiscate equipment, leading to a brief confrontation. Other journalists were also harassed and stopped from working.”
The incident followed a heavy rainstorm on Tuesday, which reportedly caused significant damage to parts of the newly constructed terminal. Strong winds during the downpour tore off sections of the roofing and scattered debris across the Maraba–Nyanya corridor in the Federal Capital Territory.
The situation led to severe traffic disruption, forcing some commuters to walk long distances as vehicles struggled to move through flooded and debris-filled roads.
The Kugbo Bus Terminal is a major transport project overseen by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. It is part of a ₦51 billion initiative approved by the Federal Executive Council in May 2024 for the construction of three bus terminals in Abuja, located in Kugbo, Mabushi, and the Central Business District, with Planet Projects Nigeria Limited handling the construction.
Although the terminal is not yet fully operational, the recent damage has raised concerns among residents and commuters about the quality and durability of the facility.
Some commuters expressed worry over how quickly the newly built terminal was affected by the storm, urging authorities to prioritise stronger infrastructure and safety standards.
The incident has also sparked renewed concerns about press freedom and the treatment of journalists covering public projects. Media observers emphasised the need for journalists to be allowed to perform their duties without intimidation.
TVC News also reiterated the importance of press freedom, stating that journalists must be allowed to work without harassment, as independent media plays a crucial role in promoting transparency and accountability in governance.
