The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has refuted allegations of partisanship in handling the failed recall process of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

INEC had earlier on Thursday dismissed the petition to recall Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, stating that it did not meet the constitutional requirements.

During an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, clarified the commission’s stance. He explained that the petition was not rejected over an address issue, but rather because the covering letter submitted by the petitioners did not include the required address, as stipulated by regulations.

He said, “In the case of the Kogi Central District, we received a petition accompanied by a cover letter. There was speculation that we were being partisan, but the reality is that the covering letter lacked the required address. We simply requested them to provide it. This had nothing to do with the petition itself, and no law mandates INEC to reject a petition solely due to a missing address on the cover letter. There was no foul play involved.”

When asked whether the recall process could be repeated, Oyekanmi noted that the law does not specify how many times a recall can be attempted. He stated, “The law only specifies the threshold: to initiate a recall, the petition must include 50 percent plus one signatures. There is no legal limit on how many times the recall process can be undertaken.”
