The results of the recent elections in Edo State reflect a significant and unsurprising triumph for the All Progressives Congress (APC), with Senator Monday Okpebholo and Dennis Idahosa securing resounding victories. For political pundits closely monitoring the state’s political landscape, the shift towards the APC was already clear well before the polls closed. The APC’s victory was rooted in a combination of local politics, strong grassroots support, and the undeniable impact of the party’s achievements in office. CONTINUE READING.

The phrase “all politics is local” holds true, especially in elections. As seen in Edo, victories are secured unit by unit, at the grassroots level, where people’s daily realities resonate most deeply. The APC’s success can be attributed to its ability to build and sustain this local support, even in the face of global challenges such as inflation and economic crises that have affected the lives of citizens. While these issues certainly posed a challenge, the APC’s case for why it deserved the people’s support remained compelling.

One key figure who played a major role in ensuring this outcome was Engr. Abubakar Momoh FNSE, the Minister of Niger Delta Development. Hailing from Etsako East in Edo North, Momoh was at the forefront of delivering his constituency in full to the APC. His leadership during the campaign was crucial, as he successfully made the case to his people that, despite the economic realities, the APC remained the best choice for Edo’s future. His influence went beyond rhetoric—he presented tangible evidence of what the APC had achieved under his watch.

In just a year as Minister, Engr. Momoh has transformed the Niger Delta Ministry into a beacon of effective governance and public service. The region, previously beset by delays and unrest, saw a turnaround under his leadership. Peace and stability have been restored in the Niger Delta, and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), long criticized for inefficiency, has been revitalized.

Through his performance bond contract with the NDDC management, the commission successfully executed the completion of long-pending legacy projects. This stands as a clear indication that, under proper leadership, government can indeed deliver real and impactful results.

Engr. Abubakar Momoh’s leadership showcased that by holding government institutions accountable and driving them towards performance-based outcomes, long-delayed projects that are vital to the community’s development can finally be realized. His approach has set a new standard for governance in the Niger Delta, demonstrating that progress is possible with the right focus and commitment.

Among these projects are significant investments in road infrastructure, schools, hospitals, and medical outreach programs, all aimed at improving the lives of the Niger Delta people. Beyond infrastructure, the ministry also rolled out empowerment schemes and scholarship programs, both locally and internationally, aimed at uplifting communities and creating opportunities for the youth.

These accomplishments across the Niger Delta, , with Edo State also benefiting directly from these reforms and projects, further reinforced the APC’s campaign narrative of delivering tangible, measurable progress.

It was clear during the campaign that these achievements resonated with the people. Engr. Momoh’s work demonstrated that governance could be efficient, impactful, and centered on the needs of the people. His approach not only stabilized the region but also built trust in the APC’s ability to deliver on its promises, particularly in Edo North. This trust was reflected in the election results, with voters choosing to back the APC as the party best positioned to lead the state forward.

In stark contrast, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) struggled to mount a convincing campaign. Plagued by internal discord and a lack of visible accomplishments, the PDP had little to offer in comparison. Despite managing revenues exceeding ₦17 billion monthly, the PDP government had few successes to point to, with much of the state’s potential left untapped. Governor Obaseki, embroiled in multiple battles—both political and administrative—led a fractured and disjointed party that could not rally enough support to stay in power. The result? Many Edo citizens concluded that the PDP’s time on Dennis Osadebe Avenue had expired.

As Edo moves forward, the achievements of Engr. Momoh and the APC leadership will likely serve as the foundation for the state’s next phase of development. It is clear that the people have chosen progress over stagnation, and with leaders like Momoh, the future looks promising for Edo under the APC.
