EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, Names Chief of Staff and Zonal Directors
Ola Olukoyede, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has made significant appointments within the agency, including the selection of Michael Nzekwe as his Chief of Staff. Alongside this appointment, directors have been chosen to oversee each of the 14 Zonal Commands of the commission.
Nzekwe, a seasoned lawyer and former Commander of the Ilorin Zonal Command of the EFCC, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. Described as a top-notch investigator, Nzekwe has a distinguished history within the commission, having served in various departments such as Legal and Prosecution, Operations (now Investigations), Internal Affairs (now Ethics and Integrity), Servicom, and Asset Forfeiture.
According to Dele Oyewale, the Commission’s Head of Publicity, Nzekwe’s immediate assumption of duties marks the commencement of his new responsibilities. Oyewale highlighted Nzekwe’s extensive training both domestically and internationally, including participation in the Advance Defence Intelligence Officers Course organized by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA).
In addition to Nzekwe’s appointment, Olukoyede has implemented a broader restructuring plan within the EFCC. This includes elevating all zonal commands to department status, each to be headed by a director. To this end, 14 new directors have been appointed to oversee these commands. Furthermore, the Security Unit of the EFCC has been upgraded to a department, with a seasoned officer appointed as Director of Security and Chief Security Officer.
Moreover, a new department has been established within the Executive Chairman’s office, led by Friday Ebelo, the former Makurdi Zonal Commander of the EFCC. Ebelo now serves as Director and Coordinator of Special Duties at the agency’s corporate headquarters. Additionally, the former Department of Internal Affairs has been renamed the Department of Ethics and Integrity, with minor reshuffling occurring within some departments at the headquarters.
Olukoyede emphasizes that these restructuring efforts are aimed at strengthening and repositioning the EFCC to effectively fulfill its mandate. This strategic realignment reflects the agency’s commitment to combating financial crimes efficiently and transparently.
