Electricity Workers Threaten Strike Over Tariff Hike....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has strongly criticized the recent hike in electricity tariffs imposed by the federal government. This move, initiated by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), targets customers benefiting from 20 hours of daily power supply under the Band A classification. Effective April 3, these customers will now face a substantial increase, paying N225 per kilowatt-hour compared to the previous rate of N66.

Expressing their disapproval, NUEE’s National President, Adebiyi Adeyeye, emphasized the unjust nature of the tariff raise and demanded its immediate reversal. The union warned that if the hike persists, they will not hesitate to mobilize their members to resist its implementation by distribution companies.

NUEE highlighted the disproportionate impact this tariff hike would have on individuals heavily reliant on electricity for their daily necessities, exacerbating existing inequalities among Nigerians. Adeyeye underscored the necessity of government subsidies for electricity, citing examples from advanced nations where such subsidies are commonplace, aimed at supporting renewable energy initiatives and assisting low-income households in affording their electricity bills.

Adeyeye stressed that the recent tariff hike disregards the economic hardships faced by Nigerian workers and affirmed NUEE’s commitment to safeguarding its members’ interests. Calling upon all Nigerians to unite against this injustice, he urged collective action to compel the government to prioritize citizens’ well-being over corporate interests.

In the face of mounting discontent, NUEE remains steadfast in its resolve to protect its members’ livelihoods and advocate for equitable access to electricity for all Nigerians.
