At a ceremony held on Wednesday at the Nigeria Immigration Service headquarters in Abuja, Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo decorated the senior officers and declared an end to nepotism in promotions.
Expressing frustration over officers who had remained stagnant in their ranks due to external factors, the minister emphasized that under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, promotions will be based solely on merit and performance. “Personnel do not need connections for advancement,” he stated.
Tunji-Ojo addressed concerns about legal threats over promotions, asserting that seniority and performance are the true criteria for advancement. He reaffirmed, “Nepotism is a thing of the past. We can only take pride in our country when merit prevails over influence.”
He assured that promotions for 2024 are nearly finalized and will be completed by the end of September. “No one will be denied promotion based on their background,” he added. He encouraged petition writers to continue if necessary, but emphasized that the newly appointed DCGs had earned their positions.
To the newly appointed DCGs, the minister urged them to be innovative and efficient, stressing that their role is crucial in delivering a security system that Nigerians can be proud of. “Think outside the box and strive for excellence,” he concluded.
