Speaking during a courtesy visit by a delegation from the League of Northern Democrats, led by Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, at the Yakubu Gowon Centre in Abuja, Gowon explained that the creation of more states was a strategic step to promote national unity and ensure no single region could wield disproportionate power.
He urged Northern elites to build consensus on issues that serve the overall interest of the country. āI have always believed that the responsibility of preserving Nigeriaās democracy lies with the North, as embodied by the late Prime Minister, Tafawa Balewa,ā Gowon said. He also cautioned against a return to regionalism, urging that the focus should be on national unity rather than sectional interests.
Gowon reiterated that the creation of multiple states was not just to balance power within the federation but also to ensure the countryās cohesion. āThe reason I supported the creation of additional states was to prevent any region from becoming too powerful and threatening the unity of the country,ā he said.
Gowon served as Nigeriaās head of state from 1966 to 1975.
