Highlighting the significance of the call, Golit emphasized the specialized skills acquired by military personnel and the evolving security challenges in the nation. He underscored the substantial investment made by the government in training and skills development for these individuals throughout their dedicated service.
Golit asserted that it is the responsibility of the government to ensure the welfare of security agency members, especially those possessing skills that could be exploited by insurgents. He suggested that the government should institute measures to prevent such skilled individuals from offering their expertise to non-state actors, terrorists, or bandits.
Expressing the need for a periodic review of the welfare policies for armed forces members, Golit stated that the existing framework, dating back to the 1970s, requires updates. He advocated for the creation of loan facilities to support those with valuable skills, enabling them to contribute to society by creating jobs or utilizing their expertise effectively.
Drawing a comparison with practices in other countries, Golit emphasized the importance of facilitating post-retirement opportunities for armed forces personnel to continue serving the nation.
In the context of the 40th-anniversary celebration, Golit highlighted the positive impact of the 35RC through its “Friends of the Needy, Hope and Succour Foundation” initiatives, providing assistance to both members and the broader community.
Retired Maj.-Gen. John Malu, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees for 35 RC, spoke about the 40 years since their entry into the Nigerian Academy (NDA) and the subsequent retirement of many members after 35 years of service. Malu stressed the necessity for unity among security forces in addressing current challenges and expressed confidence in the nation’s ability to overcome security threats.
The newly appointed President of 35 RC, retired Air Commodore Danladi Bausa, pledged to maintain the unity among members and encouraged active military personnel to continue their efforts in countering insurgency and insecurity. He acknowledged the inevitable challenges but urged them to persevere and eliminate threats to the country.
Representing the Minister of Defence, Alhaji Muhammed Badaru, retired Maj.-Gen. Ahmed-Tijani Jibril commended the sacrifices of the retired officers and extended condolences to the families of the deceased. He encouraged the retired officers to stay relevant in various capacities and mentor the serving personnel.
