He stated, “While the decision to recall ambassadors may have its reasons and benefits, it is essential to consider the potential adverse impacts on ongoing diplomatic relations.”
Mr. Ikoli further noted that President Tinubu’s decision to recall all 97 Nigerian ambassadors stationed at embassies and high commissions worldwide, including Qatar, could indeed have far-reaching consequences for Nigeria’s diplomatic status and its connections with Qatar.
He pointed out that during the two-year tenure of Nigeria’s former Ambassador to Qatar, Yakubu Ahmed, significant progress was made in building strong bilateral relations and creating various opportunities.
One immediate concern raised by Mr. Ikoli is the potential disruption of these positive developments. The experience and established relationships of the ambassadors have played a pivotal role in advancing Nigeria-Qatar relations.
He emphasized the importance of taking prompt measures to maintain the already friendly relationship between Nigeria and Qatar, while also averting the challenges often associated with the absence of senior diplomats in foreign missions.
Mr. Ikoli stressed that with the upcoming Qatar Expo 2023 scheduled for October, the absence of a senior diplomatic representative from Nigeria could have adverse consequences.
This event not only offers opportunities for economic and cultural exchange but also underscores the crucial role of diplomatic representation.
