Despite resistance from regional leaders, including Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s presidential candidate, and former national chairman Iyorchia Ayu, the national leadership remained firm in its stance. Ayu proposed a restructuring of the party’s leadership hierarchy post-election, a decision that, in part, contributed to the PDP’s defeat in the 2023 presidential election to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Governor Adeleke, however, is committed to fostering unity within the PDP. In his words, “We discussed the importance of unity among the leaders and members of our party in the South West region, both past and present, as a crucial step in repositioning the party at the national level.” Despite internal challenges, Adeleke remains focused on unifying the PDP and navigating a strategic path toward revitalizing the party’s standing on the national stage.
Meanwhile, the PDP faced additional turmoil in Imo state, where the state chairman, Engr Charles Ugwu, was suspended following a vote of no confidence by prominent party stakeholders. The motion for suspension was moved by PDP chairmen from all local government areas in the state, highlighting the multifaceted challenges the party is grappling with at both regional and state levels.
