The current state of security in Abuja, the nation’s capital, has drawn concern from Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Expressing deep dismay over the recent tragic incident involving the abduction and killing of Nabiha Al-Kadriya, a 400 Level Biological Sciences student of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Senator Kingibe emphasized that the escalating rate of criminal activities in the federal capital is not only unacceptable but also a source of embarrassment for the entire nation…….CONTINUE READING

The unfortunate incident unfolded when Nabiha, along with her father and five sisters, was kidnapped in Zuma town in Bwari, Abuja, on January 2, 2024. While the father was initially released to gather the N60 million ransom demanded by the kidnappers, Nabiha was later murdered, and the ransom demand was increased to N100 million.

In a statement issued by her Senior Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Nana Kazaure, Senator Kingibe condemned the killing of Nabiha and others who have fallen victim to similar crimes. She described these acts as a stain on the national conscience and a direct affront to the government, whose primary duty is to safeguard the lives and properties of its citizens.

Kingibe pointed out that the prevailing security situation in the FCT denies residents, including those in proximity to the seat of power, their constitutionally guaranteed rights to safety and freedom. Expressing disbelief at the seeming inactivity of security agencies, she stressed that the residents of the federal capital, who should naturally benefit from heightened security, have become disproportionately affected by criminal activities.

Reiterating her commitment to prioritizing the safety of FCT residents, Senator Kingibe urged security operatives to enhance their efforts in curbing the rising wave of criminal activities. As a legislator, she pledged to advocate for more sophisticated and innovative policing measures to counter the boldness of criminal elements.

Commiserating with Mr. Al-Kadriya on the loss of Nabiha, Senator Kingibe called on security operatives to expedite efforts to free his remaining daughters and others held in captivity. Additionally, she called for the Federal Government to declare a security sector emergency, emphasizing the need for immediate and decisive actions to address the escalating insecurity nationwide. Kingibe urged a collaborative approach among officials from all three arms of government to combat the pervasive threat of insecurity.
