A batch of illicit alcohol in India has tragically claimed the lives of 34 individuals, with over 100 others rushed to hospitals, as reported by officials from Tamil Nadu state on Thursday.
The fatal concoction, a locally brewed arrack drink, was contaminated with deadly methanol, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin disclosed, according to the Press Trust of India news agency.
Stalin confirmed arrests in connection with the deaths and emphasized a firm stance against such crimes, stating, “Crimes like these devastate society and will be dealt with sternly,” as per a statement from his office.
Each year, hundreds in India succumb to consumption of cheap alcohol produced in illicit distilleries, often spiked with methanol to increase potency, leading to risks such as blindness, liver damage, and death.
In the Tamil Nadu incident, more than 100 individuals were hospitalized, noted M.S. Prasanth, a senior government official from Kallakurichi district, as reported by Indian media.
Expressing profound dismay at the fatalities, State Governor R.N. Ravi mentioned on social media that several victims remain in critical condition, fighting for their lives.
Despite Tamil Nadu not being a dry state, illegal alcohol, sold at a fraction of legal prices, persists due to stringent regulations in other parts of India, fostering a thriving black market for potent, sometimes lethal moonshine.
Previously, similar incidents have occurred in India, such as the deaths of 27 people in Bihar last year and 42 in Gujarat in 2022, all attributed to poisonous alcohol.
