In recent times, the sacking of the registrar and chief executive of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), AG Abubakar, by President Tinubu has become a major topic of discussion. The decision led to widespread jubilation among CAC employees. But why was there such a collective sigh of relief or, as some described, outright jubilation? CONTINUE READING
In an anonymous exposé, an insider from CAC shared intimate details about the working style and character of AG Abubakar. According to the anonymous source, “AG Abubakar was a no-nonsense man, strict in his approach, and was fiercely anti-corruption.”
Despite being the grandson of the illustrious Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Abubakar was reputed to have a certain aura, but he “knew his onions”. His policies at CAC were seen as stringent by many. He mandated that all official cars remained on office premises overnight. He put an end to the unofficial practice of using office vehicles for personal trips, like dropping family members to school or even wedding events.
In another account, the insider mentioned how Abubakar led by example. He would sometimes drive his personal car to work. He even took on the significant security agencies within the commission’s premises, including the police and DSS. Abubakar’s aim to remove them was based on the staggering cost of keeping them, which amounted to #300m.
Despite his tough stand on many issues, Abubakar was not without critics. The anonymous source detailed several instances where Abubakar’s uncompromising stances led to significant friction. From clashes with the union leader to standoffs with the Emir of Bauchi and even the Chairman of the senate committee on Trade. CONTINUE READING
His tenure also saw reforms like the CAC becoming completely paperless. However, his strict governance style, combined with his reluctance to engage in office politics, may have contributed to his eventual departure.
Reflecting on AG Abubakar’s time at CAC, the insider lamented, “He could work tirelessly, even replying to emails at 2:00 am. Despite everything, I wished he was given a second term.”
While the revelations provide a more nuanced picture of the embattled ex-chief executive, it’s clear that his leadership style left an indelible mark on the CAC and its employees.
